homo ecos: is a well-known Latvian environmental organization based in Rīga, capital of Latvia. Its mission is to create a social movement that not only supports environment-friendly ideas, but also puts them into practice. We work to inform and educate people about environmental issues, to involve them and to encourage them to change their everyday habits to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Possible tasks of the volunteers are:
– organizing events and workshops (educational games, creative upcycling workshops, movie nights, excursions, etc)
– supporting homo ecos’ ongoing projects and activitites
– creating informational campaigns
– keeping the website and social media up to date
– office work
– documenting our events and activities (photo, video)
– creating graphic design (posters, flyers, etc)
– organizing Repair Cafe and helping people learn how to repair things on their own
– maintaining our eco garden and organizing events there
– realizing your own initiative

homo ecos: is a Latvian environmental organisation, based in Riga. Our mission is to create a social movement that not only supports environment friendly ideas, but also puts them in practice through activities that are beneficial for both people and the environment. The organization promotes a healthy, green and sustainable lifestyle.The main objectives of the organization are:
-To educate society about environment protection, through non-formal education activities for children, youths and adults;
-To promote wider use of nature- and human-friendly materials (e.g. bioplastics, FSC or recycled paper, organic cotton);-
To develop awareness about the importance of conservation of natural resources, as well as waste sorting and recycling;
-To inform society about responsible food production and consumption (e.g. eating local, seasonal, organic food; avoiding food waste);
-To promote wider use of renewable energy;-To raise awareness about the negative implications of climate change;
-To educate professionals about sustainable practices (e.g. green offices, green event management);
-To promote positive regulations and legislation regarding sustainability, human health and environmental protection;
-To encourage academic research regarding environment friendly materials, renewable resources, environmental impact and energy conservation.homo ecos: works to inform and educate people on environmental issues, as well as to involve them and encourage them to change their everyday habits towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
Main activities include social campaigns (the annual campaign “Latvia, the greenest country in the world?!?”, most recently about climate change (2016) sustainable food consumption (2015) and packaging waste (2014)) and non-formal educational activities for children and youths (creative workshops, excursions, movie nights, discussions, lectures, educational games). Further, homo ecos: cooperates with partners to develop sustainability Guidelines and Checklists for green offices and events. Within the Erasmus+ framework, homo ecos: participates in and hosts youth exchanges and training courses related to environmental topics and green lifestyle, and sends and receives EVS volunteers. The organisation “homo ecos:” was established in 2007. It is currently governed by a board of three people and its office staff consists of 6 employees, plus 2 EVS volunteers and occasionally a Latvian or international intern. Additionally, homo ecos: can depend on a trusted pool of local volunteers and supporters, as well as experts on various environmental topics. homo ecos: closely collaborates with many other NGOs, like-minded entrepreneurs and businesses, local authorities and municipalities. The organisation is a member of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LTRK), the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation (LAPAS), the Civil Alliance Latvia (ELPA), the Corporate Social Responsibility Platform (KSA Latvija) and International Young Nature Friends (IYNF). homo ecos: has a good presence in the media, both traditional (TV, radio, magazines, news portals), as well as social media (Facebook profile in English, Twitter account in Latvian, a YouTube channel, as well as a page on the Latvian social network www.draugiem.lv).
accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Accomodation is in a 2 bedroom apartement not far from the workplace, which has all the necessary furnitures and equipment. Volunteers get monthly food allowance. Bicycle is provided for the volunteers for everyday use. Work related travelling is covered by the organization.
