Project description
The Glencraig Biodiversity project is based at the Camphill Community Glencraig (Glencraig) on the southern shore of Belfast Lough between Belfast and Bangor in Northern Ireland. For further information about Glencraig see additional information below.
This project is funded by Erasmus+ as part of Key Action 1 Youth Mobility. The project will start at the beginning of October 2018 and conclude at the end of September 2019. There will be three volunteers taking part in the project from the following countries: Finland, Poland and Portugal. Glencraig will work with our partner organisations from these countries in selecting suitable volunteers.
The purpose of the project is to raise awareness of environmental issues and the importance of biodiversity. The volunteer will develop his/her knowledge of the importance of having a rich variety of plant and animal life in an area, to develop skills in creating healthy ecosystems and an awareness of the health benefits of these practices.
The volunteer will work three days a week in the Farm or Market Garden at Glencraig in order that he/she can develop skills in working outdoors in a natural environment with others.
One day a week will be for training and development, see below for further information.
The final day of the week the volunteer will be responsible for developing projects on their own or with others. The project coordinator will provide support for the volunteer with these projects. The purpose of these environmental projects is to help other people become more aware of the importance of biodiversity. The volunteer will be involved in working with different groups by preparing the activities, working with the groups, carrying out evaluations of the activities and provide additional information to promote biodiversity.
The volunteer will have the opportunity of working with some of the following groups:
– People with a learning disability from Glencraig
– Staff and vocational volunteers who live and work at Glencraig
– Volunteers from local businesses and organisations
– Pupils from local schools, young people from youth clubs and voluntary organisations
Participant’s profile
The volunteer should be interested in developing the following qualities in themselves and others:
• Friendly, approachable & warm
• Patient, supportive & respectful
• Responsible, positive, enthusiastic attitude
• Good group & team work, a strong ethos of community
• Creativity, with ability to think on your feet and adapt to the environment
The volunteer will be expected to:
– Have an interest in the environment
– Have an interest in working outdoors
– Have an interest in working with other people
– Have a basic foundation in the English language and a willingness to develop skills in this
language
– Undertake physical work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
– Willing to engage with people who have a learning disability
– Some knowledge of biodiversity/horticulture/agriculture would be preferable but not essential
No academic qualifications are needed and if a participant has a concern about any of the above Glencraig is willing to answer questions, give advice and provide additional support to reasonable requests.
Accommodation and other arrangements
The volunteer will live in one of the houses on the Glencraig site with the other volunteers taking part in the Biodiversity Project. Each volunteer will have their own bedroom, but he/she will have to share bathroom, living room and kitchen with others. The volunteers will have the possibility of eating together and preparing their own meals. Basic household stuff (bed linen, towels, shampoo, soap, etc.) and food are provided by Glencraig. The volunteer will receive an allowance paid monthly directly to the volunteer to cover the purchasing of personal necessities.
The working hours will be Monday to Friday 9.00 – 13.00 and 14.00 – 17.00. The volunteers will have two consecutive days off per week and 5 weeks holidays spread over the 12 months. In free time participants will be able to access excellent public transport links to the nearby towns of Bangor,
Holywood and Belfast. There are Erasmus+ volunteers in Belfast and Bangor and we will encourage any participant to link in with them during their stay. During the longer holiday periods volunteers can use the time to explore the lovely locations on the island of Ireland. Personal protective equipment will be provided but volunteers should bring adequate clothing for all weather conditions.
As part of the Erasmus+ there is funding available for travel to and from Glencraig at the beginning and the end of the project. This funding volunteers will only receive after successfully completing the project. If this arrangement makes it difficult for any successful volunteer to participate in the project, please contact the Project Coordinator.
Robust risk assessments will be undertaken in conjunction with the volunteer and the necessary mitigating steps will be taken to ensure the safety of the volunteers during their placement and in theirtasks and activities. Glencraig has a 24 hour emergency community contact number which volunteers will receive upon arrival. Glencraig will support the volunteer registering with the local GP (Medical) practice, the volunteer
should bring a valid EHIC card with them.
The learning outcomes for the volunteer taking part in the project are as follows:
Develop transferrable specialist knowledge of horticulture and agriculture according to organic and biodynamic principles
Increased awareness of environmental issues and the importance of sustainable practices in
promoting biodiversity
Develop the ability to organise and lead activities
Improved oral and expressive English skills
Increase self-esteem and self-empowerment through taking on tasks and responsibilities within the project
Develop the ability to inform others about the importance of biodiversity
Develop skills and expertise in working with people who have a variety of needs and who can display challenge behaviour
Develop the ability to work as part of a team and work collaboratively with others
Develop an understanding of the importance of values including respect, inclusivity and upholding the dignity of others
Develop knowledge of the importance of healthily living through raising awareness of nourishing nutrition and engaging in outdoor activities in a natural environment.
Throughout the duration of the project the participants will be required to complete weekly learning logs which will encourage active reflection on their progress towards the agreed learning objectives.
The volunteer will have a team meeting once a week with the project coordinator and the other volunteers on the project where the learning outcomes will be discussed and agreed in conjunction with the volunteer. This will enable the volunteer to continually evaluate his/her performance and identify at early stages any barriers to learning. The volunteer will have individual supervision once a month which will be captured on a supervision template and will be undertaken by the project coordinator and will feed into the evaluation process.
The Camphill Community Glencraig is situated in Northern Ireland between Belfast and
Bangor, it is on a beautiful estate of 100 acres (45 hectares) with woods, fields and parklands sloping down to the shore of Belfast Lough. There are 19 houses, various school buildings, some communal buildings and workshops with the farm in the heart of the Community. Glencraig was established in 1954 to provide a unique approach to supporting children, young people and adults with learning disabilities. Over the years Glencraig has developed a reputation for providing a special holistic approach which enables everyone to reach their full potential and live a happy and meaningful life.
Glencraig prides itself on the high standards of care, support and education provided in a nurturing environment. Over the last 60 years Glencraig has promoted biodynamic/organic
agriculture/horticulture and other environmentally sustainable practices. The Glencraig estate is a wonderful area to carry out environmental projects and has benefited from many years of work in this area. There is a high appreciation for the importance of biodiversity and there are many people engaged at Glencraig who have a high expertise in developing projects in this area with volunteers.
