project description
The association “unerhört” – Sozialwerk für hörgeschädigte Kinder und Jugendliche Freiburg e.V. (Charity Organization for Hearing-Impaired Children and Young People Freiburg) is a non-profit organization. It mainly supports students of the Bildungs- und Beratungszentrums für Hörgeschädigte Stegen (Vocational Education and Consultation Centre for the Hearing-Impaired Stegen). This includes hearing impaired children and young people who get their care in other institutions and families in the region.
In their work, volunteers learn about the social demands of hearing impaired people. Working on a social project gives the volunteers job orientation and perspective for their future. When volunteers independently design care activities, they can be proud and learn to depend on their own skills. School and residence workers guide the volunteers. So, the volunteers can help organize the support programme and free time events for the students.
accommodation, food and transport arrangements
The volunteer will get a single room in the residence hall of the center. Cooking facilities and bathroom have to be shared with other volunteers.
The volunteer will get full board in the refectory of the center or food stuff for self catering, and a payment in kind according to the degree of the German tax authorities during holidays.
To travel around the area, volunteers get a monthly transportation ticket. This includes free-use of all the public transportation of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald transportation authority region. Volunteers can also use the ticket in the bordering counties.
training during the project
During the voluntary service the volunteer will be supported in all administrative affairs (announcement at the registry office, applying for residence permit, opening an account with the bank, insurance affairs etc.). The volunteer will be send to the on arrival- training and the obligatory mid-term-meeting organised by the National Agency.
The language training will take place during the semester at one or two evenings per week at the University of Freiburg. 3 hours of language training will be counted as working hours.
volunteer profile
Volunteers should like working for the development of needy people. They should be open to working with disadvantaged young people or youth who might be excluded from society. Past experience in working with special needs children and youth would be helpful. Volunteers should be able to individually design and plan activities. They should also be helpful and be able to work with other team members.
Basic knowledge in german language will be helpful. Learning the German language should not be the volunteers’ only or main motivation for volunteering with this project.

Old Age Care Home Emmaus – Haiterbach

project description
The Seniorenzentrum Emmaus is a qualified institution for inpatient care of old people (residents live there). The house has 78 care spaces that are double or single rooms. This includes 8 short-term care spaces. There is also a day care programme for people in the area who need help. The institution offers holistic (mind and body) and encouraging support care with additional therapy services. There are also many free-time activities, varied events and a high level of comfort.
Volunteer workers are a valuable part of the team, which improves the life of our seniors (elderly residents). While working at the Center, volunteers will develop their qualifications in the areas of personal, social and language competence. They will learn about different lifestyles and how to support old people. Some of these old people may be very fragile or have psychiatric changes (mental disease of the mind). Volunteers will learn about the organization and duties of an old age care institution.

Volunteers get a single room at the institution or in a separate home near the institution.
Volunteers get their meals for free at the old age home or vouchers for the local supermarket to buy foodstuff for self catering.
To travel around the area, European Volunteers get a monthly transportation ticket. This is for the regional transportation authority of Bäderkreis Calw. With this ticket, volunteers can use all transportation of the ÖPNV in the Calw region for free (no cost). Volunteers can use this ticket in the VCG fee-area on: workdays after 9am and 24 hours on weekends.
training during the project
To decrease problems from the start, volunteers go to important introduction seminars where they’ll receive information about the institution and their duties.
There is continuous professional support for the volunteers. One example of support is regular reflection talks. A neutral person from outside of the core group will lead these talks.
Apart from the compulsory EVS training cycle provided by the National Agency there is also weekly language training at the local adult education center.
volunteer profile
Volunteers should be interested in social work in the area of old-age care. They should also be open to working with old people who need care. Some of the residents may also have old-age diseases of the mind (for example, Alzheimer’s).
Volunteers should be able to connect with other people.
Basic knowledge of the German language is helpful for the daily contact with: the residents, day-guests of the institution, family members and co-workers.
Learning the German language should not be the volunteers’ only or main motivation for volunteering with this project.
